Messier 83 is a barred-spiral galaxy in the constellation Hydra – one of the closest and brightest spiral galaxies in the sky, and sometimes called the “Southern Pinwheel”.
M 83 lies 15 million light years away, has a true diameter over 100,000 light years and a luminosity of 36 billion suns. Star-forming regions exist near the center of the galaxy.
